Performing Arts

The College of Performing Arts is a place of training for theatre studies. It has its own theatre and workshops and combines – with the exception of ballet and directing – all important stage-arts: playwrights; stage and costume designers; and stage actors.

Whereas the courses of study Musical and Creative Writing for the Stage are relatively new, Acting and Singing have a long tradition in Berlin. The Berlin University of the Arts, as the only arts university in Germany, offers a Masters degree course of study, lasting four semesters, in Theatre Education. Aim of the course is to qualify in professional dealings with the medium of theatre in different educational fields of work.

It is possible for teachers to acquire a supplementary qualification in Drama either as a course alongside career or as a full-time course of study. In addition, the interdisciplinary course of study Cabaret is also offered. Within the College, the different courses of study work closely and practically together on related projects – as in the theatre. It is important that students work self-dependently as early on as possible.

All courses of study present their work to the public. There are performances in the theatre of the Berlin University of the Arts, in various studio theatres and other theatre venues in Berlin (Saalbau Neukölln, Sophiensaele, Theater unterm Dach etc.). In addition, co-operation agreements exist with the ‘Deutsche Oper’, the ‘Komische Oper’, the ‘Neukölln Oper’ as well as with the ‘Theater des Westens’.
