Since the summer of 2006, a Berlin University of the Arts master’s course in Fine Arts and Design has been offered at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. The course is aimed at graduates with a first university degree in the arts (Bachelor of Arts) who come from China and the area of Pacific Asia; outstanding artistic talent is also taken into consideration. This is a German master’s degree course with a Chinese teaching component; the German teaching components are presented by professors of the Berlin University of the Arts on site in Hangzhou. The course is five semesters long and includes a period of study in Germany. Berlin University of the Arts is thus the first European University of the Arts to offer a Master of Arts course in China.

Chinese and German. An intense course in German is one component of the degree.
Organisation
Berlin University of the Arts is responsible for the development and mediation of academic artistic teaching material and methods. Thus the demand is met for an art course based in China but with reference to German art and culture. Both universities are responsible for the realisation of teaching in the course sections allotted to them. They cooperate on the basis of admission and examination regulations written by Berlin University of the Arts and are collaborating to coordinate admission and examination procedures.
Number of Students
In the current semester there are 46 students on the course. Each year, a total of 40 students will be admitted to the master’s course.
Tuition Fees
At present, tuition fees amount to 5,000 Euros for each year of study.
Admission Examinations
The admission examinations will take place in Hangzhou in periodic intervals.
The foundation of this study course is being supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) within the context of the programme "Study Opportunities Offered by German Universities Abroad".
