Juana Awad holds a degree in semiotics and theater studies from the University of Toronto in Canada, an MA in Cultures of the Curatorial from the Academy of Arts in Leipzig, Germany, and an MFA in media arts from the Slade School of Fine Art in London, England. She moved to Berlin after receiving a DAAD research scholarship at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2002, she has worked as an artist and curator and has led festivals and cultural projects. She was co-director of the Karneval der Kulturen and production manager of the Afrikamera Film Festival in Berlin, director of the academic consortium SDFLIC at York University and Alucine Latin@ Film and Video Festival, and initiator of the first interdisciplinary S-3D conference in Canada. Juana Awad has curated and contributed to program design for a wide range of established institutions, including the Toronto International Film Festival, Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival in Canada and the Bogotá Museum of Art in Colombia. Her video art has been internationally exhibited and is distributed by VTAPE and GIV.
