Exhibition ‘On Projection’
The exhibition displays outcomes from a six-month-long research project with artists from the LensBased Class of Prof. Hito Steyerl and took place at the University of the Arts Berlin:
Adrian Knuppertz, Andres Villarreal, Barbara Marcel, Bruno Siegrist, Filipe Serro, Georgi Gago Gagoshidze, Georgina Hill, Mehi Park, Neda Saeedi, Pauline Niedermayer, Roozbeh Tazhibi, Mikk Madisson and special guest artists, filmmakers, theorists: Kamal Aljafari, DAAR (Decolonizing Architecture Art Residency), Daniel Irrgang, Sandra Moskova, Daniel Franke, Kaya Behkalam & Jens Maier-Rothe & Azin Feizabadi.
The research project, “On Projection. Historiography as Aesthetic Practice”, led by Azin Feizabadi, Daniel Franke and Sandra Moskova, was a dense philosophical approach on principles of social, technological and cultural emergence in a computer age. It was divided in six weekend sessions and coined by three main perspectives: the analysis of complex systems, the politicum in the context of historiography (chronology, “Chronos”) and the construction of knowledge through Literature. The fundament was a deep desire to experimentally externalise structures (matter, meaning, unified truth, poetry, discourse) through technical, media and narrative approaches.
To challenge hardened classifications in theory, story telling and technology, also external guests – a.o. Daniel Irrgang, Florian Cramer, Paul Feigelfeld, Kamal Aljafari – enriched the research process and once more underlined the main statement of the course, which was to make sense of the principles of complex systems and criticize linearity, a.o. in the sense of man-made history, put in front of natural laws.
Emerged out of these regular inputs and combined with a closely followed working progress, the works in “On Projection” demonstrate a diversity, which cannot be summarized under one single main topic, yet they ask the same question: Is it possible to emancipate history from scientific and ideological borders?
