The Filminstitut (film institute) at the UdK Berlin is a research facility dedicated to artistic research and experimental studies to historically and critically explore new opportunities in film. New inventions and novel combinations of media and technology are a coherent component of film. The forms of reception, however, are constantly changing. The Filminstitut at the UdK Berlin sees itself as part of this process. Artistic research and experimental studies are used to historically and critically examine film in order to explore new opportunities.
The Institute focuses on advanced research into film history and film theory, the development of complex DVD structures (“DVD als Medium kritischer Filmeditionen” – DVDs as a medium of critical film editions) and event cycles. The Filminstitut publishes the DVD edition of student works (monographs).
In addition, the Filminstitut is home to the only European venue of the US-American project “Oral History of TV,” a television research project with extensive opportunities for study.
