Dear friends of SoundS,

As we enter winter we would like to invite you to our first sic! sound in context lecture of the semester.  For this session we will will host Alex Hawthorn an artist, composer, and technologist whose work flows between performance, installation, object-making, and sound-making. This talk presents a selection of their recent works and, through these works, discusses art’s singular potential to find the emotional hook in scientific research. The session takes place on Wednesday, November 20 at 7pm at our usual spot on Lietzenburger Straße 45, 10789 Berlin, Room 315.

A new semester also means the start of a new season at SoundsAbout, our student-run and student-focused gallery space in Schöneberg. This weekend we celebrate the opening of a new exhibition entitled con·spire. Over the course of the next month a new work will be shown each weekend, offering insight into the individual art practice of a student, creating an overview of the diverse, interdisciplinary field of the emerging generation of sonic arts.

con·spire runs from 15th November till 15th December at Zwitschermaschine, Potsdamer Str. 161, 10783 Berlin

Hope to see you there,

con·spire | New Season Opening At SoundsAbout

Collective exhibition of the UdK Sound Studies & Sonic Arts Master’s program

15. November - 15. December 2024

We are happy to announce the new SoundsAbout season titled con· spire, taking place between 15. November - 15. December at Projektraum Zwitschermascine. The exhibition showcases recent works from the Sound Studies and Sonic Arts Master's program at the Berlin University of the Arts during the span of a whole month. Each weekend offers an insight into the individual art practice of a student, creating an overview of the diverse, interdisciplinary field of the emerging generation of sonic arts.

The word Conspire originates from latin, meaning “to breathe together”. Following the notion of Salomé Voegelin that breathing is the the essence of being with, through concerts, installations and talks we will plot ways of relationally, and sound connecting disjointed bodies.

How can we use sound to make us aware of the shared bodies we create through vibrations, of what we become together formlessly and temporarily in passing? At the same time, how can we harness this porousness to nurture community and responsibility towards each other rather than simply end up romanticising sound. The students of Sounds Studies and Sonic Art’s program invite the visitors to reflect on the environmental existence of ourselves through the indivisibility of sonic environments.

Black holes and tectonic plates - Hawthorn’s work looks at the unseen and unheard in the natural world as a potent space for artistic expression.  Through a process of research and iteration, they dilate these “un-sensed” objects and develop them into sound-forward works of installation and performance.  This talk presents a selection of their recent works and, through these works, discusses art’s singular potential to find the emotional hook in scientific research.

Alex Hawthorn is an artist, composer, and technologist whose work flows between performance, installation, object-making, and sound-making.  They use their work as a lens through which to investigate the natural world, specifically focusing on time: how we experience it, how we have codified it, and what exists beyond our comprehension. Their work in theatrical sound design has garnered them an Obie award, LA Ovation Awards, and has been heard around the world. They hold a BFA in theater from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and an MFA in Art and Technology & Composition and Experimental Sound Practices from the California Institute of the Arts.

Sic! Sound in Context is a lecture series with international guests on sound art, electronic composition and sound-related media art with talks, presentations and lecture-performances.
