From Media and Painting through Sound Art to Creative Writing
The programme of the Berlin Summer University of the Arts 2017, based at the Berlin Career College of the Berlin University of the Arts, has been published. From now on you can register for a total of 31 short courses, which will take place between June 16th and October 11th 2017. For the sixth time already, a wide range of disciplines will be offered to artists and creatives from all over the world during these summer months: apart from Visual Art, Music, Design and Performing Arts, Arts Management, Creative Entrepreneurship as well as interdisciplinary formats will be taught.
New within this year's Berlin Summer University of the Arts is the CUT//ACT: Video (and) Activism workshop: the communication designers Andréa Poshar, Simona Venditti and Tom Bieling will discuss the changing role of media, in particular how "video" has been used as a political tool. Participants will improve their skills on media theory, media activism and design research, not least by producing an activist video themselves. Fine Artist Valérie Favre will give a deep insight into the field of painting and will challenge young artists to find new ways of expression and to broaden their perspective. Based on theoretical examination, emerging collectors - guided by the art experts Karl-Heinz Lüdeking and Stefanie Gerke - will get the opportunity to develop their own collecting criteria and to put them to the test during the Berlin Art Week.
Another novelty this year: a workshop on the Berlin Techno scene given by Matthias Pasdzierny and Kim Feser, which will keep a close eye on the vibrant nightlife of the capital city in a more aesthetic and historical way. Sabine Sanio from the Berlin University of the Arts Master Program Sound Studies and Sonic Arts together with Dorian Lange will be giving a fascinating three-day insight into the history and curatorial practice of sound art combined with lectures, discussions and excursions to Berlin's exhibition venues. A self-marketing course for musicians and an intensive week devoted to the most important organists and organs in and around Berlin are also offered in the music section. Along with Gerd Uecker, Jonathan Alder and Janice Alford, the international renowned soprano Cheryl Studer will offer again a master class for young professional opera singers, who, in addition to the training for singing and musical interpretation, will learn about important aspects of theater life and gain insights into agent selection criteria.
For the first time within the programme, Angela de Castro will guide participants into the world of clowning. An introduction to storytelling will give an insight to the artistic narrative, and a writing ashram will be offered once again as scientific writing training for PhDs and post-docs. In a four-day workshop participants will be guided by the two dramatists, David Spencer and John von Düffel, through a series of precisely patterned exercises, each of which reveals the key elements of scenic writing.
Experience a colorful and international summer in Berlin at one of the biggest and most diversified universities in Europe: over 300 participants from over 30 different countries around the world will be our guests and create a unique atmosphere of artistic exchange and networking in connection with the discovery of new horizons. Young Artists - those beginning their careers (up to one year after graduation) and advanced students (in their final semester) - can apply for partial scholarships for all courses at this year's Berlin Summer University of the Arts. The scholarships cover half of the respective course fee (max. 200 Euros). The deadline for applications is April 15th, 2017.
