Preliminary selection, video recording

  1. First movement from a standard concerto from Beethoven on
  2. One virtuoso piece with or without piano (can also be a Caprice by Niccolò Paganini)
  3. First movement from one of the following pieces:
    · Franz Schubert: Duo A major D 574
    · Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Sonata B-flat major KV 454
    · Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Sonata A major KV 526
    · Ludwig van Beethoven: Sonata No. 6 A major op. 30 No. 1
    or Sonata No. 7 C minor op. 30 No. 2
    or Sonata No. 9 A major op. 47
    or Sonata No. 10 G major op. 96
  4. Two contrasting movements from a Sonata or Partita for solo violin by Johann Sebastian Bach

First round

Maximum of 16 candidates

1. One of the following Fugas by Johann Sebastian Bach:
· Fuga from the Sonata No. 1 G minor BWV 1001
· Fuga from the Sonata No. 2 A minor BWV 1003
· Fuga from the Sonata No. 3 C major BWV 1005

2. Niccolò Paganini: One of the 24 Caprices for solo violin op. 1

3. Two movements from one of the following sonatas:
· Gabriel Fauré: Sonata No. 1 A major op. 13
· Claude Debussy: Sonata G minor L 140
· Maurice Ravel: Sonata No. 2 G major
· César Franck: Sonata A major

4. Compulsory composition written for the International Max Rostal Competition by Thorsten Encke: N.N. 
The music will be sent with the confirmation of acceptance. It can be played with or without music. The piece must not be performed in public prior to the competition.

Second round

Maximum of 8 candidates

A recital of choice lasting no longer than 60 minutes (50 to 55 minutes playing time) including a virtuoso piece with or without piano and a piece from the following list:

  • John Corigliano: The Red Violin Caprices
  • Béla Bartók: Sonata for Solo Violin Sz. 117
  • Béla Bartók: Rhapsody No. 1 Sz. 86
  • Béla Bartók: Rhapsody No. 2 Sz. 89
  • Leoš Janácˇek: Sonata
  • Witold Lutosławski: Subito
  • Olivier Messiaen: Fantasie for Violin and Piano
  • Francis Poulenc: Sonata FP 119
  • Sergey Prokofiev: Sonata D major op. 115
  • Arnold Schönberg: Phantasy op. 47
  • Igor Stravinsky: Duo Concertant
  • Igor Stravinsky: Divertimento
  • Igor Stravinsky: Suite Italienne
  • Eugène Ysaÿe: One of the sonatas for solo violin op. 27

All pieces must be played in full.

Third round

Maximum of 3 candidates

The last round will be played with the Hamburger Camerata without conductor, the candidates will lead the rehearsal.

  2. Arvo Pärt: Fratres for violin, string orchestra and percussion (can be played with music)
