Dear friends of SoundS,

We are writing to express our gratitude to everyone that attended our master exhibition over the weekend. Congratulations to all of our gradutating master cadidates and a big thank you to our hosting venues the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin, Panke Culture and West Germany. We would also like to take this opportunity to share details with you of our next event which takes place tomorrow evening at our base on Lietzenburger Straße.

On the 11th of June we welcome Benjamin K. Bacon for the next installment of our sic! lecture series. For this session the Berlin-based artist and researcher will discuss his ongoing PhD research into design strategies for new musical notation and choreograpic interaction. .

The lecture will take place on Wednesday, June 11th at 7.30pm on our premises at Lietzenburger Straße 45, 10789 Berlin, Room 315 in cooperation with UNI.K (Prof. Kirsten Reese).

We hope you can join us!

Sic! - Benjamin K. Bacon - Design Strategies for New Notations and Choreographic Interaction

Language: English
Lietzenburger Straße 45, 10789 Berlin, Room 315
22 Jan 2025, 7 pm

This talk, rooted in Benjamin K. Bacon's latest research on information design in notation and novel digital musical instruments, explores how musical notation can function as a perceptual and interactive interface. Bridging music composition, human-computer interaction, and information design, Bacon presents notation as a choreographic tool, one that shapes behaviour and mediates the relationship between performer, technology, and intention.

The lecture addresses the continuum between prescriptive and descriptive approaches to scoring, with a focus on how metaphor and literal constructs inform the design of notational systems. Drawing heavily from principles of information graphics, Bacon proposes that notation is not simply a representational form, but a system of action; adaptive, embodied, and deeply contextual.

Sic! Sound in Context is a lecture series with international guests on sound art, electronic composition and sound-related media art with talks, presentations and lecture-performances.
