Artist biographies between National Socialism, resistance and reorientation in the post-war period

Book presentation Wolfgang Ruppert (ed.) ‘Blendwerke’ (Metropol Verlag)

UdK Berlin, Hardenbergstraße 33, Charlotte-Salomon-Saal (Room 101)

Welcome address: Prof. Dr. Markus Hilgert, President of the UdK
Introduction: Prof. em. Dr. Wolfgang Ruppert
Prof. Dr. Otfried Scholz: On reading the book ‘Blendwerke’
Statements: Dr Harald Schulze, Dr Eckhart Gillen

What changed between the artistic freedom of the Weimar Republic, the Nazi art world and the arduous new beginning of the post-war period? How did artists respond to the challenges of the Nazi worldview and the structural changes in the art world? The example of the biographies of four art professors at the UdK's predecessor institution reveals different degrees of participation.
This was contrasted by the active resistance to Nazi repression shown by some young artists such as Elisabeth Hohenemser, Kurt Schumacher, Wolfgang Thiess, Oda Schottmüller and Cato Bontjes van Beek in the university environment.
