The college follows in the tradition of its highly-respected predecessor institutions, which have provided musical training of the highest standard in Berlin for the past 200 years. It represents a diverse range of music, offering opportunities for specialization as well as encounters with music of all kinds. The range extends from artistic training in orchestral and chamber music, early music and contemporary music, to artistic-educational courses for future teachers, church music, conducting, composition and sound-engineering.

The college of music has eight institutes, for example the piano department or the department of musicology.

At Berlin University of the Arts there are a number of ensembles for interested students. They make music together in choirs, chamber music ensembles, and the symphony orchestra of the UdK Berlin.
