Worlds that Whisper is a five day screen printing workshop exploring extraversion, introversion and the visual language of affect through associative drawing experiments, mirrored paper cuts and paper stencil screen-printing.

Each of us contains multitudes. Our self is a collection of sensitive, raging, serious, silly, soft-footed, stomping, sauntering, cowardly and courageous creatures. Our inner worlds are in turmoil: they are made up of busy conferences and delicate alliances. We are also mirrors for the outside world: the news we read, the content we consume, the people we encounter on the street, the chaos and intensity of city life – they infiltrate the porous membrane of our selves and colour our emotional landscapes. The terms introversion and extraversion were first used by CG Jung to describe differences in our personalities in terms of how outwardly or inwardly focussed we are – do we search for new impressions, for inspiration, beyond ourselves, or are we content to get lost in the maze of our own inner life? Do we need connection to complete us, or are we enough?

Worlds That Whisper is a playful journey into our heads: what would visual representations of our various impulses, traits and idiosyncrasies look like as abstract forms, as creatures, as metaphysical entities? How do they relate to each other? Is their relationship a loving or antagonistic one, a neutral or entirely indescribable one? Our aim is to explore the visual language of affect – the shapes we give to feelings – through an associative, hands-on process: drawing, folding, cutting and printing. Every day, each participant will create an edition of small prints in 1-2 colours using a simplified screen-printing technique which uses paper stencils: working with mirrored papercuts and modular compositions, we will create worlds full of symmetry and contrast.
