Prof. Marion Hirte

Marion Hirte was born in Braunschweig. After graduating from high school, she studied theatre studies and German language and literature at the Freie Universität Berlin from 1986 to 1994. During this time, she also worked as a freelance journalist for television, radio and newspapers, as well as an assistant director at state theatres and independent theatre groups.
After completing her master's degree, Marion Hirte joined the Theater Bremen as a dramaturge and moved to the Residenz Theater in Munich in 1996. In 1997, Hirte became head of press and public relations at the Berliner Ensemble. From 1998 to 2006, she worked as a dramaturge for Frank Baumbauer, first at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg and later at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
During this time, she also taught at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre and at the Otto Falkenberg School. In 2007/08, she was chief dramaturge at the Schauspielhaus Graz and in 2008 was appointed Professor of production dramaturgy at the Berlin University of the Arts. She worked as a guest dramaturge at the Schauspiel Köln and was part of the management team of the International Festival for New Music Theatre, the Munich Biennale, from 2016 to 2024. From 2015 to 2019, Marion Hirte also served as managing director of the European Theatre Academy ‘Konrad Ekhof’, which organises the annual national competition for young German-speaking actors.
Marion Hirte has been head of the acting programme since 2013 and will be vice-dean of the Faculty of Performing Arts from 2022 to 2025 . In June 2025, she was elected vice-president of the University of the Arts.
