Land*scapes are archives of change and continuity, chance and precise composition. They are constructions at the thresholds of nature and culture, two impulses often portrayed as separate or oppositional. The climate crisis increasingly challenges this artificial separation and reduces our options to frame and control landscapes, as they are constantly both emerging and vanishing in front of our eyes. The pace of events alters and harms landscapes faster than we are able to define them.
What may archiving as an artistic practice mean under these conditions? What properties should an archive have, that reflects the radical transformations we face? How can archiving, which is as much about an illusive objectivity as it is about framing specific perspectives, help us to preserve a sense of what is disappearing without perpetuating extractive practices.
During the seminar we will get to know different forms of land*scapes and different methods of archiving. To help us immerse ourselves fully in the different (land*)scapes we encounter, we want to grow a collective archival installation together, that may include collecting seeds, fermentation, as much as digital traces, sketches, sounds, practices and knowledge. Approaching the final chapter of Studium Planetare, we want to look out for what’s been, what might be and what remains.
Accessibility information: The language will be determined in consultation with the participants. Whispered translation into English/German will be offered. The event room is partially wheelchair accessible. Please also let us know about your accessibility and language needs, even if they may not correspond to the specifications here in the event. Please send an email with the subject ‘Access Seminar’ to sp-seminar@klasseklima.org.The events are open to everyone (including non students).
Performance requirements for the ungraded certificate: 3 LP are awarded for active participation in the seminar and reflection on the topic in an artistic-creative work. An extra LP can be awarded for active exchange in an open plenary session accompanying the artistic practice and for the joint development of a final exhibition.
Studium Planetare is a two-year, student-initiated and student-led pilot project by Klasse Klima, in collaboration with the Studium Generale of the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). The Studium Planetare will offer students and facilitators at the UdK, and beyond, an innovative and interconnected curriculum focusing on climate justice and planetary futures. The Studium Planetare is funded by the Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre under the "Freiraum 2023" program line.
