Mission statement
Guiding principle: universality
Raising awareness of universality and teaching the ability to make artistically nuanced statements is a central concern of the Faculty of Music at the Berlin University of the Arts. This aspiration can only be fulfilled by adhering to the highest standards. Thus – despite the diversity of the degree programmes – the task common to all is to strive, in the interests of both the students and the disciplines, for an artistic and intellectual exploration of the issues and for high-quality artistic and academic outcomes based on knowledge and skills.
The Faculty champions the diversity of music and, to this end, establishes centres of specialisation as well as spaces for encounter. It stands in the tradition of its renowned predecessor institutions, which have upheld music education in Berlin to the highest standards over the past 200 years. The spectrum of artistic training encompasses early music as well as the classical-romantic repertoire, new and contemporary music, diverse forms of popular music, and music transmitted in written and oral form from all continents, all eras and specialisations.
At the level of degree programmes, the Faculty of Music offers courses in the artistic field covering solo performance, orchestral and chamber music, as well as composition; in the artistic-pedagogical field, degree programmes for the training of instrumental and vocal teachers, as well as teachers for general education schools; and, in addition, specialised training such as in church music and conducting, sound engineering training, the promotion of young musical talent, and further academic qualification. In the neighbouring Faculty of Performing Arts, all qualifications in the fields of singing and musical theatre are available.
As a centre for autonomous artistic practice and education, the Faculty of Music is committed to the artistic and academic advancement of music, as well as to the freedom of the arts and sciences.
Excellence in the arts, science and education
Three pillars underpin the work of the Faculty of Music: at the heart of it all lies artistic practice, which, through its international focus, meets the highest standards. Work relating to performance, composition and improvisation is informed by scholarly reflection. Finally, the third pillar is dedicated to issues surrounding the teaching of music. In all three areas, which intertwine and enrich one another, the pursuit of excellence is paramount.
A distinctive profile: within the context of the University of the Arts
A particular opportunity lies in the integration of the Faculty of Music into the broader context of the University of the Arts. This arrangement gives rise to an understanding of music that is rooted in tradition whilst simultaneously embracing a broader conception of music, taking into account other artistic disciplines and collaborating with them. The Faculty of Music is therefore concerned both with the preservation and further development of existing musical forms and with strengthening the innovative potential inherent in opening up to the other arts and new artistic expressions.
