Berlin, ein visuelles Memoir, 2026 (Berlin, a Visual Memoir)

Berlin, ein visuelles Memoir, 2026 (Berlin, a Visual Memoir) is an artistic project that translates the practice of journaling into a visual form. In the shape of a drawn memoir, the twelve districts of Berlin are portrayed. Each page is dedicated to one district, showcasing three (format-dependent) drawn representations of well-known landmarks, historical neighbourhoods, architectural details, and atmospheric impressions.

The project combines illustration, urban observation, and book art into a multifaceted visual diary. The combination of small drawings on each page gives the project the character of a serial, fragmentary collection of memories. Through a specific folding technique, a spatial dimension is created, giving the art book a sculptural quality when opened.

Sara Assadi, Lecturer at the College of Fine Arts

Sara Assadi was born and raised in Tehran. Since 2008, she has lived and worked in Berlin. After completing her first Master's degree, she worked as a consultant for five years. In 2017, she made a deliberate shift towards artistic practice. In 2024, she completed her studies with a Master's degree in Fine Arts. Since then, she has been working in her studio in Berlin-Wilmersdorf.

In her artistic practice, the image is not conceived as a mere representation, but as an event. Drawing and painting condense relationships, time, and perception. Visibility unfolds in the interplay between presence and withdrawal, between fragment and void. What is shown always carries the unseen within it. What appears is reduced to its essence and results from action and interaction — as a trace of a shared experiential space that is constituted in the moment and sedimented in the image.
