International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2025

More information on contact points, advice centres and event tips can be found below.

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Berlin University of the Arts is sending a clear message against violence against women* by raising the flag designed by the Berlin Senate, “Berlin sagt nein zu Gewalt gegen Frauen!” (Berlin says no to violence against women!), on 25 November.

In 1999, the UN General Assembly designated 25 November as the annual International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. The day draws attention to the fact that women continue to be exposed to high levels of gender-based and domestic violence, which prevents them from fully exercising their fundamental freedoms and human rights.

Violence against women is not an exception. According to the BMBFSFJ (Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth), 256,276 people were victims of domestic violence in 2023, 70 percent of whom were female. This is an increase of 6.5 percent compared to 2022. Violence against women is not a women’s problem, but a problem for society as a whole and must not be trivialised. We must no longer talk about relationship tragedies or jealousy dramas when women are threatened, beaten or even murdered. With the Istanbul Convention, which came into force on 1 February 2018, Germany has committed itself at all levels of government to combating violence against women, offering protection and support to those affected, and taking preventive measures against violence.
