Certain documents can only be submitted within the application deadline, e.g. proof of payment of the application fee. 
If you do not submit these within the deadline, you will be excluded from the application process.

Please note: Particularly at the end of the application period, it cannot always be guaranteed that the Registration and Examination Office (IPA) will check the documents submitted within the application period. If you want to be sure that your documents are complete and in order, we recommend that you submit your application directly at the beginning of the application period if possible. If you find a note in the application portal that documents are missing, you still have enough time to submit them.

There is no standardised application deadline at the UdK Berlin - the deadlines vary depending on the study programme. They are also earlier than at academic universities and sometimes start as early as January for winter semester programmes. Many UdK study programmes start in the winter semester, but some also start in the summer semester. Further information can be found in the ApplicationGuide.

 

 

The UdK Berlin charges a fee of EUR 30.00 to EUR 50.00 per application for participation in the application and admission procedure. Teacher training programmes in subjects for which the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family has defined an urgent need at Berlin schools are exempt from the payment of application fees.
Information on the application fees for the individual study programmes and the UdK Berlin account details can be found in the ApplicationGuide.

The application fees must be paid and proven within the application deadline for the respective study programme.
Therefore, please enclose a bank statement (proof of payment if transferring from abroad) or a sales receipt (for online banking) for the application fee with your application.
Other proof / receipts (e.g. transfer orders) will not be accepted.
A refund of the fee is excluded. This also applies to rejected applications and if the application is cancelled.

For international transfers:
Please note that you must pay all transfer fees (OUR - sender pays costs) yourself. Your application can only be accepted if the application fee has been transferred in full to the UdK Berlin account.

 

With the exception of a few continuing education master's programmes, no tuition fees are charged at the Berlin University of the Arts. This also applies to international students. 

All students at Berlin's universities must pay a fee of currently around €330 per semester. This semester fee consists of a contribution to studierendenWERK BERLIN (social contribution), the student union fee (Asta), the re-registration fee and the contribution to the Germany semester ticket. (See: Information on re-registration and fees).

For the continuing education master's programmes at Berlin Career College, the fees listed below are charged in addition to the general semester fees.

Leadership in Digital Innovation (Master's)
The costs are €1,500 per module (six weeks in duration, ten modules in total) and €3,000 for the double module of the Master's thesis (twelve weeks in duration), totalling €18,000.

Music Therapy
The Berlin University of the Arts charges a fee of €407 per month (plus a one-time start-up fee of €1,850) for participation in the Master's programme in Music Therapy, for a total of €16,502. Sound Studies and Sonic Arts
The Berlin University of the Arts charges a total fee of €18,800 for participation in the Master's programme in Sound Studies and Sonic Arts. At the Berlin University of the Arts, only the joint study programme ‘Design and Computation (Master)’ with the Technical University of Berlin is an NC programme. Information on applying can be found in the ApplicationGuide. The application process is carried out by the Technical University of Berlin.

All other study programmes do not have a numerus clausus.
Selection is based on an artistic admission procedure. The application procedures are carried out directly by the Berlin University of the Arts.

For a number of study programmes at the Berlin University of the Arts, proof of artistic talent and a general higher education entrance qualification are mandatory requirements. This applies to the following bachelor's programmes: all teacher training programmes, architecture, social and business communication (GWK) and sound engineering. For these study programmes, in addition to proof of artistic talent, admission based on professional qualifications is also possible under certain conditions in accordance with §11 of the Berlin Higher Education Act.

For other study programmes (e.g. design, visual communication, artistic-pedagogical training in music), the general higher education entrance qualification is usually a requirement, but in exceptional cases, applicants without a Abitur may also be admitted if the admissions committee determines that they have special artistic talent.

For many purely artistic study programmes (e.g. fine arts, artistic instrumental training), the only school requirement is proof of completion of compulsory schooling (in Germany: usually ten years of schooling) instead of a general higher education entrance qualification.

If you are unable to submit your school leaving certificate (e.g. Abitur) at the time of application, please submit your most recent school report. If you are admitted, we will require a certified copy of your school leaving certificate for enrolment.

 

If you are unable to submit a first professional university degree (e.g. Bachelor's, Absolvent*in, diploma) at the time of applying for a Master's programme, or if you do not have a Master's degree for the Meisterschüler*in / Concert Exam, please submit a current transcript of records within the application deadlines.
A diploma supplement will not be accepted as proof!
If you are admitted, we will require a certified copy of your university degree certificate for enrolment.

If a transcript of records cannot be issued for your current studies, we require a certificate from the university with the following information:

• Name of the student
• Study programme and degree 
• When are you expected to complete your studies?
• Information on the standard period of study, preferably supplemented with total credit points
• If possible: List of studies and examinations already completed

 

International applicants are treated equally to national applicants. They should also send their applications directly to the UdK Berlin.
However, for some bachelor's and all master's programmes, applicants must have their foreign qualifications recognised by uni-assist e.V. (VPD) before applying to the UdK Berlin.

If you go through the Gaokao procedure for prospective students at the APS, your documents must also be checked by uni-assist e.V. so that you can obtain a VPD. This is necessary so that the UdK Berlin can clarify your subject commitment.

 

What is uni-assist e.V.?

uni-assist e.V. is the ‘Work and Service Centre for International Student Applications,’ which verifies and evaluates foreign certificates.

Certificates can be evaluated throughout the year, regardless of the application deadline at the UdK Berlin.
The processing time is approximately four to six weeks (from receipt of the documents and payment).

IMPORTANT:
uni-assist e.V. only carries out the preliminary examination of certificates for the UdK Berlin and creates a ‘preliminary examination documentation’ (VPD).
Applications for the desired study programme must be submitted via the application portal my.udk-berlin within the application deadline. Therefore, please submit your VPD to us in conjunction with the other documents relevant to your application in a timely and proper manner.
If you do not receive the VPD in time, it may be submitted at a later date in exceptional cases. In this case, please include a request for a VPD with your application.
Please note that without a VPD with a corresponding evaluation, enrolment is not possible!

Bachelor's Degree: 
You need the VPD if you obtained your university entrance qualification abroad or obtained a foreign school leaving certificate in Germany (e.g. IB Diploma) and are applying for the following study programmes:

• If you have a German university entrance qualification or a German university degree
• If recognition and evaluation has been provided by an APS certificate (China, India, Vietnam)
  Exception China: Gaokao procedure
• If you have completed a preparatory college course in Germany that is suitable for your chosen study programme

 

What documents does uni-assist e.V. require from you?

Bachelor's Degree:

• A simple copy of your university entrance qualification/school leaving certificate, including your transcript of grades.
  For IB diplomas: Please also submit the four semesters of the final phase.
• Copies of previous academic achievements (if available)

Master's Degree:

• Simple copy of your university degree, including a transcript of grades

If the certificates are not issued in German or English, you must submit a certified translation in addition to the original.
The required documents must be uploaded to uni-assist e.V. in digital form only; this also applies to any certified translations. If additional documents need to be submitted, uni-assist e.V. will inform you.

 

How do I apply to uni-assist e.V. for a VPD?

• Register on the uni-assist portal
• Choose the semester and the university (Berlin University of the Arts).
  As uni-assist certificate evaluations (VPD) for the Berlin University of the Arts are available throughout the year, you can select any semester in the uni-assist portal.
• Select whether you would like to apply for a bachelor's study programme, a master's study programme or a graduate study programme at the Berlin University of the Arts (‘BA – all subjects’, ‘MA – all subjects’ and ‘Graduate – all subjects’)
• Fill out the required forms and upload the necessary documents to the uni-assist portal. 
• The fees can be paid directly in the uni-assist portal.
• Once your documents and payment have been received, you will receive a confirmation of receipt from uni-assist.
  If you do not yet have a VPD for your desired study programme at the time of application, please send us the confirmation of receipt as a temporary substitute with the required application documents for the respective study programme.

=> uni-assist e.V. and the UdK Berlin have opted for a purely digital process. It is therefore not necessary to send documents by post to uni-assist e.V.

The university colleges offer the following specialised courses to prepare students for university studies:

G course: for humanities or German studies
T course: for mathematics, natural sciences or technical studies
W course: for economics and social sciences
S course: for language studies
M course: for medical, biological and pharmaceutical study programmes

If you want to apply for a study programme at the UdK Berlin that requires a general university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur), you can take a G course. A T course would also be possible for the study programmes in architecture and sound engineering.
For the study programme in Communication in Social and Economic Contexts (GWK), a G course or a W course would be possible.
Please note that in order to complete the preparatory college, the examination to determine university aptitude (Feststellungsprüfung) must have been successfully passed.
No preparatory college is required for purely artistic study programmes at the UdK Berlin.

Most study programmes at the Berlin University of the Arts have been converted to the Bachelor's/Master's degree structure. However, there are also some artistic study programmes (Fine Arts, Art and Media, Acting, Musical Show and Scenic Writing) that are exempt from the conversion. Here, after successfully completing their studies, students are awarded the university degree of ‘Absolvent*in’ (graduate).

The Absolvent*in degree is an independent artistic university degree. Absolvent*innen study programmes, which comprise ten semesters, are equivalent to a Master's degree.

The Berlin University of the Arts trains teachers in the subjects of art, music and theatre/drama. In the subjects of art and music, study programmes are offered for teaching at primary schools (GS) and integrated secondary schools and grammar schools (ISS/Gym). In the subject of theatre/drama, training is provided for teaching at integrated secondary schools and grammar schools.
In addition to studying at the Berlin University of the Arts, two further subjects must be studied in the teacher training courses for primary schools (German and mathematics at the Free University of Berlin) or one further subject for ISS/Gym (at HU Berlin, the FU Berlin or the TU Berlin).
If you would like to apply for a teaching degree with an artistic subject, you must apply exclusively to the Berlin University of the Arts.
Please note: A different application procedure applies to special education.

For some study programmes at the UdK Berlin, there is a separate application procedure for people applying for a higher semester, e.g. graduates of Fine Arts, BA Design, BA Visual Communication. For this, it may be necessary to have completed a minimum period of study in conjunction with a minimum number of completed study and examination achievements as a prerequisite and to provide evidence of this. You can find more information in the ApplicationGuide.
In other study programmes, you will participate in the classic application procedure, but after enrolment you will have the opportunity to have your previous study and examination achievements recognised and thus shorten your studies.

During the application process, you will be asked whether you are transferring from another university.
Please only click ‘yes’ if you are already studying in a comparable study programme and wish to continue your studies with us.
If you also wish to change your study programme when transferring, please click ‘no’.

If, at the time of enrolment at the Berlin University of the Arts, you have already completed coursework and examinations at other universities or in other study programmes but have not yet graduated from your previous study programme, we require a certificate of good standing from your previous university with the following information for enrolment:

• Name of the student
• Study programme and degree 
• Have all coursework and examinations been successfully completed?
• Which coursework and examinations were not passed and how many times have they been repeated?

The title ‘Meisterschüler*in’ is the highest artistic distinction awarded to particularly gifted graduates of certain artistic study programmes.
This distinction is awarded in the following study programmes at the Berlin University of the Arts: Fine Arts, Composition, Visual Communication, and Art and Media.

 

The summer semester begins on 1 April, with lectures running from approximately mid-April to mid-July.

The winter semester begins on 1 October, with lectures running from approximately mid-October to mid-February.

 

There is no magic formula for compiling the contents of your portfolio, preparing your (home) assignment or concept. Your work should demonstrate your engagement with the topics. Use your portfolio to show where your artistic strengths lie and demonstrate your powers of observation, independence and intensity. Applicants should also familiarise themselves thoroughly with the respective study programme. We highly recommend attending the UdK tour, which takes place every year in mid-July.

The UdK Berlin does not generally offer portfolio consultations. 
Exceptions: The Faculty of Fine Arts offers so-called ‘Pre-Colleges’ for the fine arts teacher training programmes in the winter semester. Potential applicants are welcome to bring a portfolio to this information event for review. The dates will be published in good time on the Faculty of Fine Arts website.

In the field of music, the district music schools in Berlin offer corresponding preparatory programmes. The  Landesmusikakademie Berlin offers regular weekend courses to prepare students in the field of music theory/ear training.

Every year on the last weekend of the summer semester, usually in mid-July, the UdK Berlin holds its ‘Rundgang’ (open day).
Visiting the Rundgang is particularly recommended for prospective students interested in the fields of fine arts, architecture, design, visual communication, art and media, stage design and costume design. More detailed information and the exact programme will be available on our website from the end of June/beginning of July.

Once a year, usually in May/June, the Berlin University of the Arts holds its ‘crescendo’ music festival – an event of interest to prospective students in the field of music.

In addition, public recitals and performances are held regularly during the semester in the faculties of music and performing arts.
