Auftakt: Opening with professors of the UdK Berlin – crescendo

Friederike Roth

Full wind sounds with chamber music works from Berg, Brahms, Berio and Dvořák.

With Auftakt and Volltakt two concerts with chamber music heavyweights open this year's crescendo festival! Nothing less than outstanding soloists on their instruments - and professors at the UdK Berlin - will present works by Alban Berg, Johannes Brahms, Luciano Berio and Antonín Dvořák on stage. In doing so, we celebrate two anniversaries together with the UdK Wind Ensemble Berlin Winds and friends, as our long-time clarinet professor François Benda celebrates not only 50 years of his own clarinet playing, but also 25 years of teaching at the UdK Berlin. Consequently, the evening honors this with works for and with clarinet from small (Berg) to large (Dvořák) - and of course the jubilarian also takes up the instrument. The meaningful title of Berio's 1951 Opus NumberZoo for wind quintet already indicates an extraordinary concert experience: The instrumentalists become narrators and tell a whimsical animal story in each movement, about deer, mice, tomcats and the dance in the barn. The finale is the impressive Wind Serenade by Dvořák, which - enriched only with double bass and cello by string instruments - is lesser-known than the composer's String Serenade, but is in no way inferior to it in terms of richness of sound color and vibrating sound waves.
