Fête de Fauré Quartett – Chamber music against boredom – crescendo

Ben Wolff

The Fauré Quartet plays chamber music to combat boredom, and there is much to celebrate...

Franz Schubert: Adagio and Rondo D 487
Antonín Dvořák: Piano Quartet in D major, Op. 23
Modest Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (arrangement for piano quartet by D. Mommertz/G. Gruzman)

Fauré Quartet: Erika Geldsetzer, violin / Sascha Frömbling, viola / Konstantin Heidrich, cello / Dirk Mommertz, piano

The Fauré Quartet is one of the leading piano quintets of our time, has won numerous awards (including ECHO and the German Record Critics' Award), has released albums of classical and romantic repertoire on Deutsche Grammophon and Berlin Classics, and has a unique selling point that is almost unbelievable nowadays: it has been playing in the same line-up since its foundation in 1996. The ensemble's 30th anniversary, achieved against all odds, will be celebrated this evening with Schubert, a rather unknown but incredibly light and fresh piano quartet by Dvořák, and an arrangement of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition for piano quartet. The Russian composer wrote this piece to process the death of his close friend and painter Viktor Hartmann, and in it the music onomatopoeically expresses the individual scenes from Hartmann's paintings.

In addition to the anniversary, there is a second reason to celebrate: Dirk Mommertz, pianist of the quartet, is celebrating his appointment as a new professor of chamber music at the Berlin University of the Arts with this concert. We say: welcome and here's to the next 30 years!

Support us!

The Berlin Senate has imposed enormous savings targets on public universities. You know that: An excellent musical education consists not only of the many hours of solitary practising and lessons by professors, but also, to a large extent, of performing in front of an audience. This inherent part of the training is also the opportunity for you to attend almost always free concerts at a high level. We don't want to have to cut back on this. By attending our events, you can also show those responsible in politics that music and art are meaningful for every society. And if you can: support us with small or large donations. The donations are used for teaching, tuning, transport, advertising material, for our music festival crescendo - wherever no funds can be spent at the moment. This directly benefits our students and also you as the audience, as this is the only way we can maintain events of this calibre and variety.

You can donate here.

Thank you very much!
