Artist Talk mit Katerina Duda

Katerina Duda combines socially engaged artistic practice, actions and interventions in public space with documentary film and video. Her works often emerge from long-term research into specific locations and the social, political and spatial conditions that shape them.

In this artist talk, Duda will present a series of works that explore urban space in different ways, often involving local communities in the process. The themes range from the impact of tourism on the Adriatic coast to plants and everyday movement through one’s own neighbourhood. What connects these projects is the understanding of public space as a common good, and of artistic practice as a means of reclaiming, inhabiting and critically examining it.

Duda’s work is guided by the idea that space reflects broader social conditions, and that a site-specific approach — a case study of a particular location — can open up relevant questions about the contexts in which we live. In this sense, her projects often unfold in two phases: the first is situational, taking place on site and in direct engagement with a specific context; the second involves reflecting on and processing the collected material through film, installation and other media. In her recent work, Duda has been exploring ways of documenting situations and recording the “here and now”: how to capture and convey a moment without presenting it merely as documentation, but rather allowing it to actively shape cinematic and exhibition narratives.

Katerina Duda (b. 1989) is a multimedia artist with degrees in Animated Film and New Media from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, and in Sociology from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, Croatia. Since 2015, she has exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions in Croatia and internationally. Her films have been screened and awarded at national and international festivals. She teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and is also an educator at the Restart School of Documentary Film.
