The November concert by the Symphony Orchestra of the Berlin University of the Arts combines three works in which delicate artistry and sonic power come together in a stunning way. As early as the 19th century, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s overture to The Marriage of Figaro inspired composers such as Antoine Reicha to write an expansion of the original in which dialoguing melodic instruments took center stage. Sergei Prokofiev’s famous Romeo and Juliet suites are among the most compelling embodiments of what is arguably the world’s most uncompromising love story.

Alfred Schnittke’s Concerto for Viola and Orchestra, composed in 1985, revitalizes Romantic expressiveness through breaks and shifts into noise-like elements, as well as through the careful deconstruction of traditional musical language. The highly virtuosic solo part for the viola is composed with such clarity that the instrument effortlessly asserts itself against the orchestra’s full sound, even in its more subdued passages.

Vielen Dank!
