crescendo26: GegenTöne - Counter-Tones

Quietude – Big Band of the Jazz Institute Berlin – crescendo

Matthias Heyde

The evening will feature the world premiere of Thorsten Wollmann's Concerto for Trumpet/Flugelhorn & Big Band, in which Bastian Stein, Professor of Jazz Trumpet and Ensemble at the JIB, will perform as a soloist. The programme will also include works by Bill Holman and Sammy Nestico.

The JIB – Jazz Institut Berlin – has been a fixture in the crescendo programme for years and always offers new and varied concerts. This year's programme focuses on arrangements by Thad Jones, whose eponymous piece Quietude seems to suggest the opposite of what is expected at a big band evening. In Quietude, Jones uses the potential of the big band not for sonic power, but for nuance. Muted trumpets, warm saxophone sections and finely graded dynamics create a calm atmosphere without ever becoming sentimental. Jones himself was a brilliant trumpeter and arranger in the middle of the 20th century. century and played for many years in the Count Basie Orchestra, before co-founding the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1966. This new era of modern big band jazz was launched at the New York jazz club Village Vanguard. The evening will feature the world premiere of Thorsten Wollmann's Concerto for Trumpet/Flugelhorn & Bigband, in which Bastian Stein, Professor of Jazz Trumpet and Ensemble at the JIB, will perform as a soloist. The programme will also include works by Bill Holman and Sammy Nestico.

Support us!

The Berlin Senate has imposed enormous savings targets on public universities. You know that: An excellent musical education consists not only of the many hours of solitary practising and lessons by professors, but also, to a large extent, of performing in front of an audience. This inherent part of the training is also the opportunity for you to attend almost always free concerts at a high level. We don't want to have to cut back on this. By attending our events, you can also show those responsible in politics that music and art are meaningful for every society. And if you can: support us with small or large donations. The donations are used for teaching, tuning, transport, advertising material, for our music festival crescendo - wherever no funds can be spent at the moment. This directly benefits our students and also you as the audience, as this is the only way we can maintain events of this calibre and variety.

You can donate here.

Thank you very much!
