Uncertain Measures – Exhibition

Hybrid Plattform

Uncertain Measures is a series of art-science encounters inspired by the field of metrology.

From not only a philosophical, but artistic perspective, the praxis of scientific measurement is an unending one, that in turn, raises questions as to not only how measuring phenomena may affect our daily lives, but to what end these observations are stable given issues around uncertainty, the realization of units, and the traceability of measurements. This is rich territory for artistic contemplation, dialog and action.

In our first encounter, we present the installation "intangible resonances" by Berlin-based Japanese artist Akitoshi Honda. As both an interaction designer, programmer and media artist, Honda explores the relation between human perception and media, in particular, via the characteristic properties of light. In "intangible resonances" Honda explores the interaction between vibration, sound, and interference through the use of long-duration audio recordings as catalysts for pattern building in a laser beam. Using a sensitive low-frequency microphone (IEPE accelerometer) for measuring the vibrations of the surrounding ground of the TU Hauptgebäude over a 24-hour period, Honda has developed a praxis that uses unsupervised machine learning to reveal environmental structures and artifacts that are then utilized to disrupt a laser beam. The exhibition "intangible resonances" thus seeks to both visualize intangible urban artifacts, while also contemplating the role of the artist-scientist as one who not only works in pursuit of measuring phenomena in the world, but one who equally seeks to translate its fundamental qualities into ephemeral objects of beauty.
