“The future on your side” Students of the University of the Arts in the Liebermann Villa

The idea of renewal in art and supporting young artists was of central importance to Max Liebermann (1847-1935). He invited rising talents to his home to work in his studio; wrote recommendations to critics and museum directors; provided appraisals of works and arranged for the inclusion of young artists in national and international exhibitions. The opinion of the next generation was also of great importance to Liebermann, as he wrote to the director of the Hamburg Kunsthalle, Alfred Lichtwark, in 1905: “[…] You could tell me nothing more pleasant than that my younger colleagues like my portraits. When you have the youth on your side, you have the future on your side, that alone is important.” The curatorial team of the Liebermann Villa asks a similar question: What effect does Liebermann and his story have on today’s art students?

Following this approach, the Liebermann Villa is presenting the exhibition from July 8, 2023 in cooperation with the class of Prof. Christine Streuli, Faculty of Fine Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts. 23 students of the Streuli class show works of art created especially for the exhibition in the villa itself and in the garden. Inspired by Liebermann and his art, his family history and the place steeped in history, more than twenty works by the students, including video, photography, sculpture, installation, sound, painting and drawing, can be seen at the museum.
