Before I Forget / Shasha Movies

The film ‘abl ma ‘ansa I Before I Forget (2018), directed by our fellow Mariam Mekiwi is part of the first round of SHASHA شاشة, the new independent streaming service for Middle East and North African cinema, screening all of March.

A science-fiction story set in an indistinct coastal region, between land and sea, above and below water. El Captain disappears, one of his disciples takes a journey in the ocean to cut off the internet cable, the water level is rising, an amphibian woman appears at the shore looking for her mother, and the memories of two women in a ward intertwine. Scientist Dr. Sharaf is trying to congregate all of them – the members of the secret society of amphibians – in an attempt to save the world. Before I Forget premiered at the 2018 Berlinale as part of Forum Expanded.

Shasha Movies is an independent streaming service for cinema from South-West Asia and North Africa. Each month a fresh round of 20 films, carefully selected by an experienced team of regional programmers will be presented, curated around a certain theme that is socially, politically, and culturally relevant to the region. Shasha was developed by Róisín Tapponi, founder of Habibi Collective, a digital archive and curatorial platform for women’s filmmaking from South-West Asia and North Africa.
