UdK Berlin Expands its Rooftop Solar Power Generation

source: Marla Gaiser, Alexander Buschmann

Since 2011, the UdK Berlin has been using solar power generated on university building rooftops. Starting with one small system with 16 kWp installed capacity on the Hardenbergstraße building, we have gradually built additional systems: larger ones on the Einsteinufer and Mierendorffstraße buildings, and since the summer of 2025, the Medienhaus on Grunewaldstraße with 63 kWp. Currently, there are five systems providing clean power. And the sixth one is just around the corner: A 27 kWp system has been installed on the roofs of the side and north wings of the Bundesallee building. Operation will begin as soon as the grid operator gives their go. In 2026, during the roof renovation of the annex at the Einsteinufer building, another system with around 60 kWp will be installed. In the future, the three systems at Einsteinufer will provide a totao of around 130 kWp of power – the majority of which will be used in the UdK Berlin auildings and the remainder fed into the grid. The solar power systems are making an important contribution toward reaching our climate action goals. By the way, all of the systems are located on listed landmark buildings, which makes planning and implementation all the more challenging.
