About
MAKE SHIFT is a joint initiative of the Visual Communication and Product Design programs as part of INTER – Teaching Architecture (Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education Teaching) to promote exchange between disciplines and design fields. Combining interdisciplinary learning formats, lecture series, and guest colloquia, MAKE SHIFT invites international designers and researchers to provide insights into current discourses beyond the regular curriculum. Students and faculty discuss perspectives, reflect on master’s theses, and collaboratively develop new forms of cooperation and networking in interdisciplinary teaching. MAKE SHIFT thus strengthens the exchange between students and faculty in the Master’s programs in Product Design and Visual Communication. The initiative is grounded in shared interests, a common spirit, and the goal of creating a format for open exchange - one that offers space for diverse perspectives and networking. MAKE SHIFT aims not only to break down the barriers between disciplines but also to transcend the confines of one’s own field.

• What’s happening outside Berlin and beyond the UdK?
• What topics are currently the subject of heated debate?
• What trends from international practice and research are currently sparking interest among students and faculty in both programs?
• How can these topics be linked or integrated into artistic and academic approaches within the master’s theses?

During the current academic year of the master’s program, four events featuring international guest speakers will be offered during the winter semester. These speakers represent a wide range of perspectives and approaches within the field of design and have been selected by both students and faculty members. Each degree program/institute is responsible for inviting two guests. Prior to the public lectures, internal discussion sessions and colloquia (as well as joint lunches) will take place, during which students can discuss and reflect on their master’s theses with external voices. In this way, we provide insights into topics that are not necessarily covered by the curriculum and foster dialogue.
