On the occasion of the symposium Transformation des Wohnens initiated by Dr. Carolin Genz and held at TU Berlin Studio Something Fantastic is presenting research and designs from the Spring Semester at the University of the Arts Berlin. Developed under the title „Constellations Type — Housing for how people live today“ the work focuses on changing constellations of cohabitation and their spatial counterparts. Starting off from the fact that only for a limited amount of time – or, in many cases never – families live together as so-called nuclear families, while the majority of housing stock is still tailored to this scenario, leaving many – sooner or later – with either too much or too little or in other ways unsuitable living space, the studio developed housing types that provide adequate spatial solutions. The designs cover a wide range of types of constellations including before, after and beyond nuclear family living, and are able to adapt to changing needs over time. Providing space for housing that is efficiently used not only at the moment of completion, but in the long run, is not only an ecological demand from the perspective of CO2 emissions caused by the building industry, but also needed from a social perspective in times of rising real estate prices and increasing injustices between those who have an adequate (or even larger) home, and those who don’t.
