Artistic Research and Development
Artistic Research and Development
Nick Houde
Artists have a long history of collaborations with technologists and scientists, producing a form of creative research and development. This goes from early Experiments in Art and Technology's (E.A.T.) early collaborations between artists and Bell Lab scientists to the New Tendencies movement in the former Yugoslavia tinkering with the first computer generated art, until today's intersection of art/technology/science at the heart of work by Tomás Saraceno or Holly Herndon. This seminar will explore the history of these collaborations up until today where new experiments in creative R&D are unearthing entirely new practices.
The seminar will develop a history of how artists have gone beyond the exhibition hall to produce creative works alongside other practitioners and with new materials or media. The focus will be on early experiments since the 1950s where the radicality of such collaborations was still a center point.
Part of this exploration will include learning how to document and write about the artistic works and the skills necessary to produce them in different contexts. The idea being that we will develop ways of writing that respond to these different possibilities outside and within the art context to facilitate the types of collaborations that make artistic R&D possible.
There will be a strong focus on writing in this seminar with exercises and feedback every week in addition to small writing workshops to learn how to communicate about your work in different contexts.
