Where Images Take Place
Where Images Take Place
Tabea Marschall
The seminar examines how moving images do not simply depict places, but actively shape them through perspective, montage, sound, and omission. Doreen Massey’s relational concept of place provides a starting point: places emerge through social, historical, and political relations. Trinh T. Minh-ha’s engagement with documentary draws attention to the ways cinematic reality, truth, and authority are constructed through formal conventions. Tiffany Sia’s On and Off-Screen Imaginaries extends these questions by considering image circulation, diasporic memory, and the political conditions of visibility.
At the centre of the seminar are shared screenings and analyses of contemporary film and video works. We will look at how places are filmed, how historical materials are edited, how voices are positioned, and how context is made visible or deliberately kept off-screen. Conversations with invited artists will bring these questions into direct dialogue with artistic practice, offering insight into research methods, formal decisions, and production processes.
