The Bachelor and Masters courses in Costume Design at the UdK Berlin are among the few of their kind in Europe. Costume Design is telling stories about people. Its focus is on the human, the body, and its appearance. This lies at the heart of the stories that artists in theatre and film want to show and tell their audiences. The courses in Costume Design take into account current trends in contemporary theatre which make the professional field and the consequent position of the costume designer increasingly complex. Reciprocal effects between theatre, film, performance, video and installation art increasingly inspire costume designers, also in the world of crossover productions.
The courses guarantee comprehensive qualifications for professional practice as a costume designer in theatre, performance, film and television in the context of a full academic degree. The Bachelor degree is six semesters long, the Masters four semesters, with an emphasis on the conception and realisation of artistic intentions as core competencies for costume designers. Discourse, the artistic practice of methods of conceptional work, and aesthetic creative fundaments are of key importance in the courses. In public artistic processes and through artistic practice, experimentation and research is carried out. The communication of knowledge in theory and in the techniques of artisanal creation enables the students to formulate their own artistic perspectives and aesthetic points of view as independent artists and partners within a leading team.
