Requirements

Application deadline 15.03.-15.04.

Access Requirements

Admission to the course of study requires the following:

  •  University degree in the field of music, education, psychology or medicine. In individual cases the examination committee may also accept other subjects (in this case, an informal application to the examination board must be enclosed with the application documents).*

Notes: Our degree programme is a Master's degree programme that requires practical work experience. Therefore, you cannot begin your studies with us directly after your first degree, but must first gain at least 1 year of professional experience in your learned profession.

    * Application for admission with another subject can also be submitted to the examination board before the application deadline. To do so, send us an e-mail to: musiktherapie@udk-berlin.de with the written informal application and the following documents: brief curriculum vitae, copy of university degree and reasons (please also include: description of your musical career).

  • In justified exceptional cases admission can also be granted when the eligibility for the study has been acquired through the profession (instead of university degree).

The recognition of occupationally acquired skills and competences takes place in a separate proficiency examination in which the equivalence of the vocational qualification to a completed qualifying study is asserted. Formal requirement to determine the suitability is a proven intense pursuit of music therapeutic themes for around five years.

Notes: If you wish to take part in the separate aptitude test, please contact us before the application deadline if possible. Please send us your request by e-mail and enclose a brief curriculum vitae and a statement of reasons.  The aptitude test usually takes place shortly before the entrance examinations.

  •  At least one year of qualified practical professional experience

Notes: The word "qualified" refers to your degree, i.e. you have to prove that you have worked in your profession (e.g. pedagogical degree - work as a teacher) for at least 1 year (full-time, part-time at a longer duration accordingly) after your studies. You do not have to prove experience in a music therapy context. If you are unsure whether your professional experience is sufficient, please send a request to musiktherapie@udk-berlin.de and include a short CV.

  • Work shadowing in an institution with clinical-therapeutic or psychosocial focus: applicants with no experience in the psychosocial field at least 10 weeks with a total of min. 50 hours, all other applicants 6 weeks with a total of min. 30 hours. No more than two years should have passed since the beginning of work shadowing in this institution.

Notes: Unfortunately, we are not able to arrange work shadowing placements for you. You can do the observation in any psychosocial care facility (hospital, old people's and nursing homes, homes for the disabled, etc.). Music therapy does not have to be offered on site. If you have the opportunity for a special music therapy observation, you should of course take advantage of it. However, these places are usually rare and often occupied by music therapy students. When looking for a place for observation, you can also contact the German Music Therapy Society.

We recommend supervision of the work shadowing (three to four sessions). Supervision will also prepare you for the observation interview, which is part of the entrance examination. This will be about reflecting on this observation experience with regard to your choice of the degree programme.

  • An artistic talent with regard to the music therapy orientation of the degree programme, which is determined in an admission procedure.

Notes: The entrance examinations usually take place in June or early July. The admission procedure lasts several days.
The 2023 exams are expected to take place from 8. July to 10. July 2023. All applicants will be informed by e-mail should this date change. Please keep these days free as a precaution.

  • For foreign applicants without a German university degree: proof of German language skills at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages must be presented at the time of enrolment.  For application: Proof of language skills at least corresponding to the completed qualification level B1 ( recommended level: B2).

Notes: For language preparation, we recommend that you look for an appropriate provider privately. The Universität der Künste currently only offers German courses for international students of the UdK who are enrolled for a limited period of time and have to prove their B2 or C1 German language skills.

  • Sufficient knowledge of English (individual courses are held in English.)

Please additionally inform yourself about the practical steps of the application under the link ApplicationGuide. There you will also find, among other things, important information about our  entrance examinations, which we do not publish separately on our website.

Preparation for the application and entrance examinations

At the annual information day on the Master's programme in Music Therapy in January or February, you can find out in detail about the content and organisation of the programme. Details about the date and programme can be found here.

In preparation for the entrance examinations, we would like to give you various literature recommendations, which you can access as a pdf file.

In addition, we strongly recommend participation in improvisation courses or workshops. Information on such events can be obtained from the music therapy professional associations, for example the German Music Therapy Society or from local music schools and state music academies.

For applicants without an university degree in music or music education, we have provided a sample exam to prepare for the theoretical music exam, as well as sample pieces of medium difficulty for the practical exam.
