Taking as its occasion the explosion of interest around “digital humanities,” this talk asks after the media humanists have used to represent, analyze and understand sound over the past 50 years. It turns the materialist turn back on itself, asking how and under what conditions integrated, transdisciplinary movements around the study of sound such as acoustic ecology and sound studies emerged. On that basis, it argues that “digital humanities” is not sufficient to understand movements afoot in the sonic humanities today, and attempts to outline an alternative framework for understanding sonic humanists’ technical entanglements.
