miguel witzke pereira: Lighthouse – Degree Bachelor/Master

© Miguel Witzke Pereira

BA Graduate Works 2022

In space somewhere between a darkroom and a pond, where a contemporary Narcissus could fall in love with their reflection, “Lighthouse” explores the inability to cry as a source of movement. The myth about the beautiful hunter who died fixated on his image – understood by Miguel Witzke Pereira as a figure representing queer loneliness and sorrow – is used here to tell a different story: one of transformation and connection. Having no possibility of releasing the heavy streams through tears, the dancer engages in an (auto)erotic play with the body and its artificial environment, trying to recover from the crashing waves wetting the rocks within. “Lighthouse” is a seductive homage to vulnerability, an invitation to shed the armour, a love story with the darkness and an attempt at self-healing in the presence of others.
