Bjoern Erlach’s piece “Popcorq”

Bjoern Erlach’s piece “Popcorq”

Our scholar Bjoern Erlach is going to present his piece “Popcorq” in the framework of the Mutefest which takes place in Helsinki. The Mutefest is a five-day series of concerts and workshops organized by the Centre for Music & Technology of the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki. The concert program “Mechanical and Live Music III” includes works of Erlach, Bird, Gran, Ligeti, Moon, Mureddu, Nancarrow, Raasakka, Risset, Willey, and Ylipää. All pieces are for Disklavier and partly as well live performance and electronic.

A small glimpse into the program tells us: “Popcorq deals with random aspects in the automated performance environment. Precision problems concerning the threshold at which the Disklavier plays a note are exploited.  A background layer of almost inaudible key and pedal movement lays underneath melodic lines in which accented notes through corks are resting on the piano strings in the air.  They come down to strike strings surrounding the accented notes.”
