Es sollten viele sein und sie müssen nicht zusammenpassen

The project is an opportunity to think about the institutional context in terms of the programming and presentation of works of art, as well as an occasion to focus on artistic practices and processes. A way to address underlying institutional working methods and power structures, and highlights the relationship between artists, curators, and the public. Es sollten viele sein und sie müssen nicht zusammenpassen, 2021 encourages a rethinking of the traditional division between those who initiate the program and those who (potentially) participate in it, precipitating a shift in perspective: rather than present a preconceived, fully executed exhibition, a number of local individuals, groups, initiatives, and institutions with various connections to the Kunstverein were invited to take over of the Remise and realize their own program. The initiative asks how new alliances can be forged between the practices and needs of institutions and those of artists, curators, and other cultural producers. In which formats and forums might new contact zones emerge? And, most importantly, what can Kunstverein Braunschweig do for you and your community? Each phase of this project, every program point, stems from this ongoing conversation.

We see Es sollten viele sein und sie müssen nicht zusammenpassen, 2021, as an experiment: a call to participate, to criticize, to try something out, or to rest. The process itself is accompanied by a modular, shifting architectural work by artist Valentina Karga in cooperation with various local groups and a public series of discussions.
