About
How does theater education change when artistic processes are conceived as interdisciplinary from the outset and shaped collaboratively? What possibilities arise when different artistic perspectives, methods, and skills come together in a project? “Collaborating” explores interdisciplinarity as a central practice of contemporary theater education and offers students the opportunity to test and reflect on this practice in concrete artistic processes. While theater educators have long been viewed as generalists who handle various craft disciplines themselves, a collaborative practice has been established in the independent theater scene and at community theaters, in which theater education directors work together with set designers, costume designers, choreographers, musicians, and sound designers. In performing arts education programs, however, such collaborative working methods are still rarely reflected upon systematically. This INTER project creates a shared space for experience, reflection, and research. The focus is on the question of how interdisciplinary collaboration can be shaped as an artistic practice. These processes are guided by mentors who themselves work collectively and interdisciplinarily in theater.
Artistic Projects as Spaces for Research
As part of the master’s projects in theater education at the UdK, ten students are developing seven independent theater projects during the winter semester with groups of performers they have assembled themselves. Among other topics, the projects explore the architecture and people of Schlangenbader Straße, the practice of improvisation, the hip-hop genre, neurodiversity from the perspective of Flinta individuals, queer avatars, the concept of mother tongue, and the idea of home from a migrant’s perspective.
Students from other degree programs are invited to actively participate in and help shape the artistic creative processes. Potential areas of collaboration include, in particular, costume design, set design, music, playwriting, choreography, video, sound design, lighting design, and acting. This also provides an opportunity to explore artistic tasks beyond one’s own field of study. The projects provide a space to discover new ways of working and to further develop one’s own artistic practice through exchange with other disciplines.
Time & Dates
The project kicks off on October 5, 2026, from 6PM to 10PM in Room 201, Bundesallee 1–12. Students in the MA in Theater Education will present their projects and rehearsal schedules and invite you to collaborate!
From October 2026 through February 2027, the artistic processes will be supported and mentored by faculty in the areas of dramaturgy and the conceptualization of all performance media, costume design, and project management, as well as through peer consultation on forms of interdisciplinary collaboration.
Public Final Presentation
The results will be presented to the public from February 11–14 2027, as part of the FEST SPIELE-2027 Edition Master’s Project Festival. The presentations will take place in the rehearsal hall and in Room 201 on Bundesallee and will be complemented by parties and post-performance discussions.
“Collaborate” is open to students from all degree programs who wish to explore interdisciplinary artistic practice, collective forms of work, and the intersection of theater education, artistic research, and the performing arts.

About
Time & Dates
