Humans are almost constantly covered by clothing, making it feel like an integral part of the human body. But how can clothing become more than just an outer layer?

How can clothing actually engage with the human body in a new way? Researching in this field of design, fusing clothing with technology, presents many possibilities because of its ability to store and release energy. By merging these elements, clothing can enhance the human body’s physical abilities through technology, enabling an experience of the world in a new, sensory way. “wearing sound” begins with the vision of creating suits that translate body movements into electronic information. The suits are designed to allow full freedom of movement within a close-fitting silhouette by using stretch materials in specific areas. Only certain parts of the suit feature stretch fabric, while other areas are made of durable, non-elastic materials.

This design allows for the integration of technological features in the non-stretch areas to enhance the wearer’s capabilities. The suit’s tight fit ensures precise movement tracking. Motorcycle suits became a key inspiration for this project due to their use of technical materials and their aesthetic. This project specifically focuses on the fusion of movement and sound. In collaboration between one contemporary dance artist, one drag artist, one sound designer, and one fashion designer, two suits were created. By integrating sensors made of smart textiles, the suit responds to the dancer’s movements, activating sounds when pressure is applied to the sensors.

This integration of smart textiles allows for real-time interaction between the wearer’s body and the technology embedded in the suit. As the wearer moves, the suit’s sensors capture the precise data, which is then transformed into sound, creating a symbiotic relationship between the body and the technology. This interaction opens up new possibilities for artistic expression, as it enables performers to create music directly from their body movements, and creates the ability to compose music through movements.
