Computing Experiments: Read, Write, Make and Think

Dozent: Bruno Gola <bgola@udk-berlin.de>, Alberto de Campo <decampo@udk-berlin.de>
Dates: every Wednesday, 10h-12h
Room: 111 GRU

We will divide time between: reading about unconventional approaches to computing, inviting students to prepare topics to discuss; writing code and making things to deploy in hybrid computing setups; and thinking about what these experiments mean.

While nowadays the terms "computing" and "computation" seem tied to machines implementing the classic von Neumann architecture, there are other ways of computing. In this seminar we will look at and build experiments in analog computing: fluidics, neuromorphic computing, quantum, celullar automatas, and others.

Exploring what is computing, some history, and then a dive into non-standard computing with examples and possibly inviting guests. Experiments with building and simulating these systems, and looking how different artists approached these.
