Tales – Arion Piano Trio – crescendo

Mark Taratushkin

Schostakowitsch's piano trio op. 67 is put in a dramaturgical context with Lieder from Franz Schubert and a short story of the pianist Daria Tudor.
The event discovers the possible emotions of Schostakowitsch while composing the trio - scarred by the death of a dear friend and the inner conflict of the composer in a totalitarian system, which sought to dictate to him artistic and political regiment loyalty.

The Arion Piano Trio performs an unusual combination of music and literature: the piano trio op. 67 by Dmitri Shostakovich is set in a dramaturgical context with songs by Franz Schubert (arranged for piano trio) and a short novel by pianist Daria Tudor. The musicians explore Shostakovich's possible feelings while composing the trio - marked by the death of a close friend and his turmoil in a totalitarian system that sought to dictate artistic and political regime loyalty to him. At the same time, the projection of the short novel text weaves a visual-musical web that blurs the boundaries of seeing, hearing and feeling.

The three students, who are already making a name for themselves as an ensemble throughout Germany, insert songs by Franz Schubert between the movements of the main work. This rupture of listening expectations offers multiple opportunities to empathize with the presumably most intimate thoughts of one of Russia's greatest composers.
