Prof. Dr. Sophia New

Kurzvita

Originally from London I studied Philosophy, Literature and German at Sussex University with a year at the Freie University Berlin in 1996. Just as I was finishing the BA I saw two words on a University noticeboard ‘Feminist Performance’ that spoke to exactly the gap that I felt was missing from my first degree and promptly moved to Bristol. After completing the MA in the Drama Department I began to have solo commissions with the Arnolfini Gallery and lead to me starting to also work with the experimental theatre company Reckless Sleepers. In 2002 I started the company plan b with Daniel Belasco Rogers with a keen interest in longer durational works for festival contexts and site specific performance and audio visual works. The move to Berlin also prompted a daily and long term practice of recording everywhere we go with a GPS. Recently I completed a PhD in Exeter University on the transformation of plan b’s collection of daily data through art works that have included drawing, narrating and knotting.

As a pedagogue and facilitator I have taught for the last 10 years at the HZT on the MA Solo/Dance/Authorship, courses on Live Art & Performance regularly at the Folkwang University, Bard College, Leipzig University and HCU Hamburg. Together with Daniel Belasco Rogers I am currently a Guest Professor for the Studium Generale at University of the Arts Berlin.
