This seminar invites students from all disciplines to explore the transformative world of Afrofuturism through Octavia Butler’s groundbreaking novel, Parable of the Sower. Butler’s vivid narrative, set in a future marked by ecological and social crises, offers a compelling lens to examine themes of resilience, transformation, and survival, while tackling critical issues of race, identity, and systemic change. By engaging with Butler’s work, participants will delve into the cultural significance of Afrofuturism and its ability to challenge dominant narratives. The seminar provides a unique opportunity to reflect on how speculative fiction not only reimagines our future but also equips us to navigate the "tipping points" defining our present.
It is recommended to read Octavia Butler's book “Parable of the Sower” in advance of the seminar.

Natasha A. Kelly hat im WS 2023/24 eine dreijährige Gastprofessur für Kulturwissenschaften im Studium Generale der UdK Berlin angetreten. Sie ist Kommunikationswissenschaftlerin und Soziologin, Autorin und Herausgeberin, Kuratorin und multimediale Künstlerin mit den Themenschwerpunkten Schwarze deutsche Geschichte, Schwarzer Feminismus und Afrofuturismus. Dr. Kelly hat an zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen Hochschulen gelehrt und geforscht, sie wurde u.a. als Max-Kade-Gastprofessorin für German Studies an die University of Rhodes Island (USA) und als Gastprofessorin für Medienwissenschaften an die Universität Tübingen berufen. Ihre künstlerischen Arbeiten wurden u.a. auf der Berlin Biennale, am Deutschen Historischen Museum und am Maxim-Gorki-Theater in Berlin gezeigt. Als Vorstandsvorsitzende des gemeinnützigen Vereins Black German Arts and Culture e.V. ist sie die künstlerische und wissenschaftliche Leiterin des ersten Instituts für Schwarze deutsche Kunst, Kultur und ihre Wissenschaften in Deutschland. Darüber hinaus ist sie Co-Direktorin des pan-europäischen Netzwerkes Black European Academic Network (BEAN) und Gründungsmitglied des internationalen Kollektivs Black Speculative Arts Movement (BSAM). Im August 2023 erschien ihre jüngste Publikation „Schwarz. Deutsch. Weiblich. Warum Feminismus mehr als Geschlechtergerechtigkeit fordern muss“ im Piper Verlag.
