The purpose of the workshop “Projecting Wanjiru Kinjanjui” was to set the record straight. The record in this case, was the 35 mm print of Kinyanjui’s graduation film “The Battle of the Sacred Tree (1992)”, which she made upon completing her studies at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). At some point in its projection history, the five reels of the distribution print fell out of order. Over three hours, we restored the print and reflected on the materiality, circuits and archives of Black perspectives in German cinemas.

The workshop was followed by a screening of the “The Battle of the Sacred Tree (1994)”, and Man Sa Yay (1980, dir. Safi Faye) as part of the Kine Kiez series in cooperation with the Deutsche Kinemathek.

Der Workshop „Projecting Wanjiru Kinjanjui“ sollte die Dinge richtigstellen. Dabei ging es um die 35-mm-Kopie von Kinjanjuis Abschlussfilm „The Battle of the Sacred Tree (1992)“, den sie nach Abschluss ihres Studiums an der Deutschen Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (DFFB) gedreht hatte. Irgendwann im Laufe seiner Vorführgeschichte gerieten die fünf Rollen der Kopie durcheinander. Über drei Stunden hinweg restaurierten wir die Kopie und reflektierten über die Materialität, die Verbreitungspfade und die Archive schwarzer Perspektiven im deutschen Kino.

Im Anschluss an den Workshop gab es eine Vorführung von „The Battle of the Sacred Tree (1994)“ und „Man Sa Yay“ (1980, Regie: Safi Faye) im Rahmen der Reihe „Kine Kiez“ in Zusammenarbeit mit der Deutschen Kinemathek.
