About
Room to Expand is an interdisciplinary course and transdisciplinary platform that brings together students and teachers from different classes, faculties, and institutes. The starting point is the question of how to create space for artworks and art projects that blur and cross the boundaries of the so-called White Cube. Students are encouraged to critically examine the common notion of art and to experiment with seemingly fixed parameters such as authorship, exhibition space, production conditions, time, stage, and audience, so that these can be rethought and renegotiated within the framework of their artistic work. Students are encouraged to take greater responsibility for defining these parameters themselves and to develop their projects through collegial, interdisciplinary collaboration. Room to Expand offers a platform for exchange, peer-to-peer learning, and a shared working process. At the beginning of the semester, a kick-off event and workshops provide opportunities for participants to learn from one another, form collaborative groups, and develop initial concepts for projects. During the semester, students can receive support for their projects through mentoring sessions. The workshops and inputs introduce participants to a range of artistic and interdisciplinary working methods, including interdisciplinary peer learning, performance, material practices and co-creation, as well as artistic approaches to AI and performative memory. During the semester, students develop their artistic works, which can take different time-based and performative formats, including research-based art projects, digital and participatory projects, collaborative and cross-disciplinary projects, site-specific performances, community projects, audio walks, short or feature-length films, videos, VR projects, projects in public space, and book projects. Room to Expand takes place as a recurring course in the summer and winter semesters and concludes – similar to a transdisciplinary festival – with presentations of the developed time-based and performative works.
