Workshop: “Inner Sustainability: Take a Break from the Cloud”

Digitalisation has revolutionised how you work. It has increased your speed of communication by erasing time and space. This immediacy is highly efficient, and allows you to accomplish a lot on several levels simultaneously: personally, socially, educationally and professionally. But this gift, if used unconsciously, can come at a cost to your well being. Long hours in front of a computer create challenges for the body in the form of muscular tension, shallow breathing, poor circulation, dehydration and unhealthy eating rhythms. Mentally, your capacity to absorb information and sustain attention will weaken if you ignore the body. A focus that is not grounded in something connected to the earth will tend to accumulate within the mental realm of the head, stimulating headaches and the production of stress hormones. “time saving” technology, when mis-used, can affect your overall health and potentially pull you out of being present with your work and the goals you are working towards.

Yoga views the mind and body as being intimately linked, two levels of your being that are in a constant, shifting relationship with one another. In this workshop, you will be invited to cultivate more inner balance by taking a break and bringing attention to the here and now, with simple mindfulness exercises. Adapted from the timeless practices of yoga and meditation, you will learn how to bring awareness to your own body by “checking in”, bringing attention to the physical self through a progressive body scan, the introduction of a short stretching routine for the neck and shoulders, easy breathing practices that reduce stress, a short meditation to promote focus and mental clarity and a guided relaxation. Practicing while sitting or moving in and around a chair, allows for an easy integration into your own everyday life routine and home office space. The workshop will be supplemented by a short video you can practice with at home to encourage a continued, more balanced, embodied relationship with your work in the digital world.

Taking a conscious pause in your work day can create inner sustainability when spending long amounts of time in the digital world. You are more likely to show up refreshed and present with your students, teachers and co-workers when you manage your time and energy in this way. Let’s take a break.
