Scholarship Programs of the DAAD

The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) is an association of universities and student bodies in the Federal Republic of Germany and supports students, graduates and scientists worldwide in more than 100 programs.
There are mainly annual, short-term and research scholarships, but there are also group programs, study trips and internships (see PROMOS).
The DAAD scholarship database is helpful when looking for the right program.

For the annual scholarship, you can only apply once a year (different application deadlines!) for the following academic year. The scholarship application is submitted directly (online) to the DAAD.

The DAAD launched the "Go East" initiative in 2017. Within this program, the DAAD would like to support more students from Germany for study and research stays in the countries of Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe as well as South Caucasus and Central Asia. Further information about the program can be found here.

The DAAD expects very good language skills (eg English, French, Spanish) for study visits in Western Europe. For languages that are less easy to learn basic knowledge combined with a certification from the host university that sufficient English as a foreign language is often sufficient.

Language skills for applying to a US university

For applications to US universities i.d.R. a TOEFL test is required. The respective minimum score should be inquired in time at the host university.
