Official documents do not always reflect a person‘s actual gender identity. Until a name and/or gender marker change has been completed, trans, inter, and non-binary individuals can use the dgti supplementary ID card to have their chosen first name and other self-selected personal data officially recognised. This ID is also available to those who do not wish to pursue the often burdensome civil status change process at all.

This recognition applies to all application, hiring, and admission procedures. It extends to the course of studies and graduation, as well as to the name displayed in the UdK Berlin‘s personnel database (e.g. student ID cards, certificates, email accounts, and other online communication). With the supplementary ID card, the entry in the student or personnel register can also be changed retroactively. Applicants can present their supplementary ID card to the IPA or the Human Resources Department, and the change will then be made. The departments are now working step by step to convert the processes.

The dgti supplementary ID, together with an official ID card, is recognised by the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI). It contains all self-selected personal data as well as a current passport photo. Its trilingual format in German, French, and English makes it suitable for use when travelling abroad.
