Sound Systems

Dozent: Bruno Gola <bgola@udk-berlin.de>
Dates: every Wednesday, 10h-12h
Room: 111 GRU

The term "sound system" has multiple different meanings, as it can refer to cultural artifacts,  DJ collectives, technical infrastructure (the PA in a venue), compositions, installations and performance instruments. If we look at theses systems with the help of systems theory and cybernetics we can consider their feedback loops and (de-)regulation mechanisms, exploring what are the components and the relation between them in each instantiation of a sound system. In this seminar we investigate these different systems from loudspeaker walls to sound system compositions. We look at how the organization of interdependent components produce different emergent behavior in each of them, mapping how they are organized and the relations to what is produced. We will read about different approaches, watch and listen to systems and engage together collecting materials to build and activate our own sound system(s).
