New guest professors at SoundS
SoundS welcomes two new guest professors and lead of SoundS program
Since October 15, 2026, Prof. Dr. Antje Vowinckel and Prof. Phillip Sollmann have joined the Master’s program in Sound Studies and Sonic Arts at the Berlin Career College of the Berlin University of the Arts as new guest professors. Together, they will co-direct the program, each working 50 percent of a full-time position.
Antje Vowinckel is an internationally acclaimed sound artist, composer, and performer. Before embarking on her artistic career, she earned her doctorate in experimental radio art. Her work spans the fields of radio art, experimental composition, performance, and sound installation. She has received numerous awards for her artistic work, including the Karl Sczuka Prize, the Prix Europa, and most recently, in 2024, the Prix Phonurgia Nova for her work *Opdoppling*. Among other honors, she has been a fellow at Villa Aurora and Villa Concordia and is a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz. She has been teaching in the Sound Studies and Sonic Arts program and, in addition to her artistic and scholarly expertise, brings an extensive international network and teaching experience to the program.
Phillip Sollmann is an internationally renowned musician, composer, and sound artist. He studied electroacoustic and experimental music in Vienna and combines experimental sound research, contemporary composition, installation art, and electronic club culture. Under his stage name Efdemin, he has been a fixture on the international electronic music scene for many years. At the same time, he has made a name for himself in the field of experimental sound art. He has collaborated with the Ensemble Musikfabrik, among others, and has received prestigious fellowships, including at the German Academy in Rome (Villa Massimo) and Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto.
This collaborative arrangement brings together two distinct and perfectly complementary artistic perspectives. Antje Vowinckel contributes her experience with the degree program, her academic expertise, and her deep roots in radio-based sound art. Phillip Sollmann expands this profile, particularly in the areas of experimental composition, electroacoustic sound research, and connections to the international electronic music scene. Together, they will jointly lead the program and contribute their respective expertise to teaching and the program’s further development.
“We are delighted to have secured two such distinguished figures as Antje Vowinckel and Phillip Sollmann, and we wish them both a good start, much success, and joy in their shared endeavor,” said Prof. Karin Bjerregaard Schlüter, Executive Director of the UdK Berlin Career College.
